She Lake, Stpeh Bowe, ed. Montena, 2011
La noia of llac , Steph Bowwe, ed. La Galera - Red Lluna, 2011
The original title of this novel is Girl saves boy that is translated to say "Girl saves boy." I
this little clarification because the title you have as much on the issue in Castilian, as in the Catalan edition loads the meaning and grace of the novel. To begin with the girl in the novel went through the lake, the boy was in the lake and how important is that the girl saves the guy. In a physical and spiritual sense. And besides, boy saves girl and with this act, save herself. Moving from
original owner of the lake The girl I think is part of the game spared by the novel to readers. I guess they wanted to find a more attractive title for more readers, put that beautiful picture of a girl in the middle of a lake that has little to do with the interior, giving the impression that we are dealing with the love story, I dunno, a siren or a barracuda of players, in addition to charging the nice irony of the title. I admit when I saw the first images of the novel in a catalog of new music that taught me a thought that I would find a magical tale, something like what I found in that great John Sayles film, The Secret of Seal Island (in the link, the account of the central legend of this beautiful film). A touch of magic. In reading the story and browse the first few pages and saw that my impression was wrong, I was facing a realist novel. Oops ... I'll have to write a love story between a stranger and special girl with a barracuda. Jewel
Sasha saves from drowning in a lake. With this event we have two people injured by ghosts of past and present fears. Start a friendship that leads to something else. Both drag wounds. Jewel, loneliness and abandonment. Sasha, knowing that only a few months of life. Knowing that they will fight, heal and live. Or at least try with all our strength.
and not disclose anything that it already comes on the back of books.
Love, family, death, second chances are some of the issues that comes with feeling Steph Bowe and with unusual elegance. Despite what some thorny issues, Bowe scores well because it does not fall into melodramatic excesses or scenes telefilm noon with children dying, dysfunctional family and a lot of crying and a lot of mucus. I will not deny that there are pages with a point too sentimental excess, but is not passed and to say that is justified by the life circumstances of the protagonists.
The characters are well treated, all is quiet and subtle and there is a curious way of using the elliptical narrative. And actions have logical reasons to his character. Moments you share, but I understand. Especially with Jewel. Some of their reactions are reprehensible, but are logical with the past of the character. Faced with so much abandonment and deceit, one more, although unintended, can take the selfish in all of us. Why, how many are willing to love knowing that someone dies in a few months? To love and give all wounds despite the belief it tears again?
is a novel of characters and feelings. Of agreements and disagreements. If anyone expected action or spectacle, has confused novel. Here are a lot of dialogue, many characters sitting and some tears. It is hard topics, but with elegance. I know I've said it before, but I repeat it because that's what I liked. No abuse, no melodrama. And there are loose ends. Not because it has a continuation (or I hope not, come on), but because life leaves them too.
Perhaps the novel lacks body, a more compact structural frame, a treacherous topic to develop a site more some of the issues. But this does not damage, and Lake She is still a good novel that gives a nice reading and characters that not known, are less close.
