"Mechanical Heart" Jaclyn Dolamore
, Jaclyn Dolamore, ed. Versatile, 2011
Nimira is dark-skinned girl, a stranger in a strange land, and local dancer came too baggy in less than music-hall. Senses and knows that life is more crowded than local smoke and screaming spectators. One day he receives a strange job offer from the mysterious Mr. Parry: to accompany her voice with extraordinary and exclusive music automaton pianist. Nimira delighted accepts without suspecting that within a few days will be immersed in a complex intrigue between the world of fairies, witches and hidden secrets ambitious doors. And you will love the automaton, a pianist with the heart metal. Well
. I liked. Quick read, charming and with an amalgam of interesting references and influences. Although I read somewhere that this novel was associated with the steampunk universe, I do not agree. I think Jaclyn Dolamore lies more under the influence of that wonderful all of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth ETA Hoffmann was already explored the world of robots in the story The PLC s and more especially in The Man arena where you see a musical automaton, the beautiful Olympia (story later became an opera by Offenbach grace of one of the greatest musical geniuses history. If you link to the song you are going to Olympia in the privileged throat Natalie Dessay. You can die of irony, grace and beauty). I think this is where you can find the first source and the novel germ Dolamore.
To this is added a fairy universe out of the legends of the nineteenth century, a point well past Jane Eyre, some conventions of the current junior novel, a little Gothic novel Udolpho to head a lot of magic, a little Mizayaki, a good player, an antagonist too steep, a boy trapped, agile and clear style, a nice story, an exciting finale y. .. pam ... Mechanical Heart becomes a charming little book with no other aim than to be a modern fairy tale, never better. Mechanical Heart
is a chamber piece. Few characters, few stages and intrigue minimal, but well conducted (although already known and some seasoned reader guessing to the third page ... but do not think this is what matters to the author). Maybe I'm missing a little music and exploration of the society that has witches, fairies, etc. I'm hungry for more street and the characters almost never leave the house of Mr. Parris. And the impression I have left that world is a blur. But that's all volcanic chump like a fairy tale because it works. And with the traditional roles of prince, princess and wicked witch enchanted exchanged an ingenious way.
What I hope is that this story is over here and not the beginning of a series or a trilogy or sextalogĂa or so. As work is round. The elements just, proper development and end just full of excitement and romance without falling into melodrama or excess tear (somewhat understandable given the novel its point of view in the literature of the eighteenth century and the golden mean.) Not so, and soon we will have a more mechanical heart to tarnish the freshness of Part. Every day I am more tired and I miss those days sagas of stories that ended in a novel. Sometimes I wondered what would have been Wuthering Heights, Pride and Prejudice , Around the world in eighty days Dracula so if they had been written today. Personally
until further notice, I'll take this small novel camera that provides an enjoyable read and leaves a good aftertaste. In addition, it is always nice to read a novel robots. Although in this case other than that I like to me: those that destroy cities and dominate the world.
PS If anyone is interested in the topic of robots in history and literature (whose presence begins Iliad) I can not recommend the wonderful book Prometheus's rival the publisher Impedimenta published a couple of years.
